Sunrise Granny Triangle Shawl

A classic granny-stitch triangle shawl worked point-up in rows, expanding with each row via granny clusters and chain spaces. Finished with a delicate picot edging and optional fringe for a boho-inspired look.

Pattern Notes

Note 1The shawl is worked flat, point-up, beginning with a 3-chain foundation. Each row adds one cluster to each side and one cluster at the center spine, expanding the triangle. The center spine is always worked as: cl in last ch-sp before center, (cl, ch 2, cl) in center ch-2 sp, cl in first ch-sp after center.
Note 2Each 'cl' (cluster) = 3 dc in the same ch-sp. Each 'beg cl' = ch 3, 2 dc in same sp (counts as first cl of the row). Clusters are always worked into ch-sps from the previous row, never into dc sts directly.
Note 3Between clusters, always ch 1 to create ch-1 sps along the wings, except at the center spine where a ch-2 sp is maintained. At the beginning and end of each row, ch 3 to create corner ch-3 sps along the top edge.
Note 4Cluster count tracks total number of clusters per row. Row 1 = 2 cls, Row 2 = 4 cls, Row 3 = 6 cls; each subsequent row adds 2 cls (one per side). The shawl is worked for 40 rows total (82 cls in final body row), then the picot edging is added.

Picot Edging

Edging NoteAfter completing Row 40, work the picot edging continuously around all three sides of the shawl (both long diagonal edges and the top straight edge). The edging is worked from the right side. A picot = ch 3, sl st in first ch of ch-3 just made.
Edging Rnd — Bottom Point to Right Top CornerStarting at the bottom point of the shawl (center of the ch-2 sp from Row 40's last center spine): sc in center ch-2 sp, *ch 3, sl st in first ch of ch-3 just made (picot made), sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across all ch-1 sps to right corner ch-3 sp; work (sc, picot, sc, picot, sc) in corner ch-3 sp.
Edging Rnd — Right Top EdgeWorking along the top straight edge, work sc evenly across the top edge ends of each row, placing 1 sc per row edge and 1 picot after every other sc across to left top corner; work (sc, picot, sc, picot, sc) in left top corner ch-3 sp.
Edging Rnd — Left Diagonal Edge to Bottom PointWork *sc in next ch-1 sp, picot; rep from * across all ch-1 sps down the left diagonal edge to the bottom point; sl st into first sc of edging round to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional Fringe

Fringe PrepCut yarn into strands 12 in (30 cm) long. Hold 3 strands together for each fringe bundle. You will need approximately 40–44 bundles to fringe the entire top edge.
Fringe AttachmentFold 3-strand bundle in half. Using hook, pull folded loop through a ch-3 corner sp or picot sp along the top edge. Draw cut ends through folded loop and pull snug. Attach 1 fringe bundle into each picot sp or corner sp across the entire top edge. Trim fringe to even 5 in (12.5 cm) length after all bundles are attached.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle. Soak the shawl in cool water with a few drops of wool wash for 15 minutes. Gently squeeze out water (do not wring). Lay flat on blocking mats, pin to finished measurements — 54 in wide along top edge and 26 in deep along center spine — stretching firmly to open up all ch-sps. Allow to dry completely before unpinning (12–24 hours). If adding fringe, attach after blocking is complete and the shawl is fully dry.

Notes

A gradient yarn cake or a hand-dyed ombre skein works beautifully in this construction as the color will shift gradually from the point outward. For a larger shawl, simply continue working more rows in the established pattern, allowing approximately 10–12 yards extra per additional row. For a smaller shawl, stop at Row 30 for a shoulder wrap (approximately 42 in wide × 18 in deep). Gauge swatch: work through Row 4 (8 clusters) and block before proceeding — the swatch will show your true cluster width and row height. Common mistakes: forgetting to ch 1 between clusters along the wings (this compresses the fabric), and working into a dc instead of a ch-sp (always aim for the ch-sp below). The center ch-2 sp is always larger than the wing ch-1 sps — this is correct and maintains the spine definition.
