Ridgeline Scarf

A unisex crochet scarf worked lengthwise in rows of camel stitch (hdc in the third loop), creating bold horizontal ridges that run the full length of the scarf. The flat construction and simple stitch repeat make it ideal for beginners.

Weave in both ends securely using a tapestry needle, running each tail through at least 1 inch of stitches in two directions to prevent unraveling. Wet-block or steam-block lightly: mist the scarf with water, pin to measurements (72 in × 7 in) on a foam mat, and allow to dry completely. Blocking evens the camel-stitch ridges and opens the fabric slightly.

FOUNDATION CHAIN TIP: Lengthwise construction means your foundation chain is 218 chains long — count twice before starting Row 1. A loose chain prevents the long edge from puckering; use the larger hook only for the chain if needed, then switch back to the J-10 for all rows. STITCH COUNT CHECK: At the end of every row you should have 216 sts. The t-ch 2 at the beg of each row does NOT count as a stitch — always work your first hdc or cs-hdc into the first actual stitch directly below. CAMEL STITCH IDENTIFICATION: After Row 1, each hdc has three loops. The third loop is the single horizontal strand running along the back of the fabric at the base of the post. Inserting into this loop on RS rows creates the raised ridge. On WS rows, work standard hdc into both top loops as normal. SIZING ADJUSTMENTS: For a narrower scarf (5 in wide), work 12 rows total. For a wider scarf (9 in wide), work 22 rows total. To lengthen or shorten the scarf, adjust the foundation chain in multiples of 1 stitch — each 12 sts adds approximately 4 in of length. YARDAGE NOTE: This pattern uses approximately 390 yards of aran weight yarn. Purchase at least 400 yards to allow for swatch and weaving in ends.
