Granite Stitch Washcloth

A dense, scrubby cotton washcloth worked flat in granite stitch (alternating single crochet and chain-1 spaces). Quick to stitch and sturdy enough for daily kitchen or bath use.

Fasten off and weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle. Wet block the washcloth by soaking in cool water, gently squeezing out excess moisture, and pinning flat to finished measurements (8 in × 8 in). Allow to dry completely for crisp, even edges.

Notes

Use 100% cotton yarn for best scrubbing performance and durability — cotton is also machine washable. The granite stitch pattern is the same on every row after Row 1: sc into the ch-1 sp of the previous row and ch 1 over each sc of the previous row. Take care not to accidentally sc into the turning chain at the start or skip the final sc at the end of a row, as this will shift your stitch count. To make a larger washcloth, begin with any odd number of chains and work additional rows until the piece is square. At gauge, every 4 extra chains and 8 extra rows adds approximately 1 inch to each dimension.
