Aspen Ear Warmer

A cozy chunky ear warmer worked flat in alpine stitch, then seamed into a loop with a gathered faux-twist wrap at the center front to hide the seam and add a stylish detail.

Finishing

SEAMING: Hold the short ends of the main panel together with RS facing out. Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, whipstitch the two short ends together along all 10 rows to form a loop. Do not weave in the tail yet. FAUX TWIST: Lay the seam flat at center front of the band. Place the wrap piece over the seam, centering it widthwise. Bring both long edges of the wrap toward the back of the band, gathering and pinching the ear warmer at center front. Wrap the wrap strip snugly but not tightly around the gathered section, then tuck the ends to the inside and stitch securely in place with the remaining tails so the seam is hidden beneath the wrap. WEAVING ENDS: Weave all remaining ends into the WS of the fabric and trim. BLOCKING: Lightly mist with water and lay flat to the finished measurements; allow to dry completely.

Notes

SIZING: Measure your head circumference and subtract 2 in for negative ease. The pattern as written yields an 18-in finished circumference for a 20–22 in head. To adjust width, add or subtract stitches in multiples of 2 to maintain the alpine stitch repeat. Each 2-stitch addition adds approximately 0.8 in. HEIGHT: The 10-row body measures approximately 4 in tall. Add 2 more rows (one WS alpine row, one RS alpine row) for a taller band, approximately 0.9 in per pair of rows. ALPINE STITCH NOTE: The fpdc is always worked around the post of the fpdc in the previous RS row (not into the top of the stitch), reaching down through the ch-1 sp. This creates the signature raised texture. WRAP TIP: Make the wrap snug enough to gather the ear warmer but not so tight that it distorts the band. The wrap should lay about 1.5–2 in wide at center front when finished.
