Half Double Slouch Hat

A cozy, relaxed slouchy hat worked in joined rounds from a magic ring, featuring a simple half double crochet body and a stretchy slip stitch ribbing brim worked in back loops only.

Cut yarn leaving an 8-in tail. Weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle, working ends in on the wrong side through several stitches in different directions to prevent unraveling. Pull the magic ring tail snugly to close any gap at the crown and weave in. Wet block the hat by soaking in cool water, gently squeezing out excess moisture, and shaping over a 22-in head form or balloon. Allow to dry completely. The brim may be folded up once or twice for a cuffed look.

Count stitches at the end of every increase round (Rnds 2–6) to ensure accuracy before proceeding. The ch-2 at the beginning of each hdc round does not count as a stitch; always work the first hdc into the same stitch as the slip stitch join of the previous round. Working sl st ribbing in BLO (Rnds 19–24) creates a stretchy, textured brim — keep tension relaxed on these rounds. To size up (for a 23–24 in head), work one additional increase round after Rnd 6: *hdc2inc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 sts; rep from * around (56 sts), then work all body and brim rounds with 56 sts. To size down for a child, stop increases after Rnd 5 (40 sts) and work body rounds as established.
