Stoneware Coaster Set

A set of four thick, absorbent coasters worked in waistcoat stitch from a magic ring, creating a dense, tactile fabric that mimics the look of wheel-thrown pottery. Each coaster measures approximately 4 in × 4 in.

With tapestry needle, weave in all ends securely on the WS, working through several stitches in different directions to prevent ends from pulling through the dense fabric. Wet-block each coaster by soaking in cool water, gently squeezing out excess moisture (do not wring), and laying flat to dry on a blocking mat. Pin to a 4 in × 4 in square if needed to set the shape. Repeat all steps to make a total of 4 coasters.

Notes

TENSION: Work loosely. Waistcoat stitch creates a very firm, dense fabric — if your coasters feel stiff and boardlike before blocking, that is correct; they will soften slightly after the first wash. If stitches are too tight to insert the hook between the legs, go up to a 5.0 mm hook. COLOR VARIATIONS: Make all 4 coasters in one color for a matching set, or use 2–3 earth-tone cotton colors (stone gray, warm tan, clay terracotta) for a varied set. YARDAGE: Each coaster uses approximately 20–28 yards of worsted weight cotton; purchase at least 90–110 yards to comfortably make all 4. CARE: Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry to maintain shape. HOT MUGS: 100% cotton will not melt or scorch under a hot mug; avoid acrylic or acrylic-blend yarns for coasters intended for hot beverages.
