Slip-Stitch Spa Cloth

A two-color cotton spa cloth worked flat in rows using simple slipped stitches to create a woven, honeycomb-like texture. Only one color is ever worked at a time, making this an excellent project for beginner colorwork knitters.

Weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle, taking care to hide the color-change tails along the WS edges. Wet-block the cloth by soaking in cool water, gently squeezing out excess moisture, and pinning to finished measurements of 8 in × 8 in on a blocking mat. Allow to dry completely before use.

Notes

Slip all stitches purlwise throughout. On RS rows, slip with yarn held in back (wyib); on WS rows, slip with yarn held in front (wyif) — this keeps the float on the WS of the fabric. The two colors alternate in pairs of rows: two rows CB (Rows 5–6), two rows CA (Rows 7–8), and so on. Do not cut yarn at each color change — simply carry the unused color loosely up the side of the work. The 2-stitch garter border (k2 at each end) keeps the edges tidy and prevents rolling. For a thicker, more luxurious cloth, work with two strands of DK or sport weight cotton held together. If you wish to make a larger cloth, cast on any even number of stitches plus 4 (for the border) and work additional row repeats in sets of 4 rows until the piece measures your desired length.
